🔍 Key Responsibilities

As a Principal Applied Scientist, your core responsibilities will span a range of high-impact technical and leadership functions:

🧠 Machine Learning Model Development

  • Design, train, and deploy deep learning models that support conversational AI and large-scale search experiences.

  • Build innovative evaluation sets, metrics, and training datasets using advanced heuristics and LLM prompting techniques.

  • Fine-tune and pre-train LLMs by managing end-to-end dataset curation, filtering, validation, and iterative model updates.

  • Work with industry-standard stacks such as Megatron and manage checkpoints, formats, and optimization techniques.

🔄 Data-Driven Innovation

  • Dive deep into complex, large-scale data sets to uncover hidden patterns and improve ML model accuracy.

  • Create large-scale evaluation infrastructure and pipelines to benchmark and improve model performance over time.

🤝 Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with internal and external product, data science, and engineering teams across time zones to align strategy, resolve blockers, and ensure consistent delivery.

  • Collaborate closely with stakeholders to define clear objectives, KPIs, and success metrics for ongoing and upcoming ML projects.

🗂️ Documentation & Leadership

  • Maintain detailed documentation of processes, findings, and models to foster transparency and reproducibility.

  • Provide mentorship to junior scientists and contribute to team growth by sharing best practices and guidance.

🧪 Research & Evaluation

  • Propose and implement new evaluation techniques and datasets for state-of-the-art (SOTA) models.

  • Contribute to the evolution of Microsoft’s AI product line by applying research outcomes directly to commercial applications.


📘 Qualifications

✅ Required Skills and Experience

To be eligible for this role, candidates must meet one of the following academic and professional experience combinations:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Econometrics, Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 12+ years of industry experience.

  • Master’s Degree in relevant discipline AND 10+ years of experience.

  • Doctorate (PhD) in a related area AND 8+ years of hands-on experience.

  • Equivalent experience in lieu of formal education is also considered.

Additionally, candidates must demonstrate:

  • A minimum of 3 years in leadership roles, delivering results through direct reports or team efforts.

  • Strong programming proficiency in one or more of the following languages: Python, C++, C#, Java.

  • Hands-on experience in data analytics, evaluation datasets creation, and performance benchmarking in production environments.

  • Familiarity with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, Hugging Face, and others.

  • Clear communication skills to articulate complex technical insights across interdisciplinary teams.

🌟 Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of published research experience including patents, peer-reviewed papers, or open-source contributions.

  • Experience presenting at international conferences, industry meetups, or academic panels as an invited speaker.

  • Prior hands-on exposure to LLMs, prompt engineering, and multi-lingual conversational models is a significant plus.
