Role Summary: Software Development Engineer, JWO

As a Software Development Engineer on the JWO team, you will take ownership of complex software systems, drive innovation in autonomous retail, and work on highly visible products that directly impact millions of customers. You will help scale machine learning infrastructure, design APIs, improve backend performance, and enable real-time data processing and analytics.

You are someone who thrives in ambiguity, solves complex problems, and enjoys building high-performance, fault-tolerant systems from the ground up. Key Responsibilities

Full-Stack System Design & Development

  • Architect and build scalable and secure software solutions that support Just Walk Out technology, using modern programming languages and design practices.

  • Contribute to both backend and frontend components, designing APIs, integrating with sensors, and developing customer-facing applications.

  • Develop and maintain distributed services that support real-time transaction processing and data synchronization.

Machine Learning Infrastructure

  • Collaborate with ML scientists to optimize infrastructure supporting computer vision and sensor fusion algorithms.

  • Help scale the ML model training and inference pipeline, reducing latency and improving system responsiveness.

  • Contribute to the development of tooling that enables continuous integration of AI models into production systems.

Engineering Best Practices

  • Champion high-quality coding practices, including test-driven development, code reviews, and automation in build and deployment processes.

  • Enforce best practices for system design, including fault tolerance, security, maintainability, and observability.

  • Ensure that software development aligns with Amazon’s rigorous standards for scalability and reliability.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with hardware engineers, computer vision experts, product managers, and operations to align technical solutions with business goals.

  • Participate in project planning, requirements gathering, and design discussions with stakeholders across the organization.

  • Translate business problems into technical solutions and deliver customer-ready features.

Innovation & Rapid Prototyping

  • Build prototypes and proof-of-concept solutions to explore new ideas and assess feasibility before scaling.

  • Challenge assumptions and identify new opportunities to innovate within the domain of autonomous shopping.


Basic Qualifications

To qualify for this role, you should bring a solid foundation in software engineering along with a track record of building robust, scalable systems.

  • 3+ years of non-internship professional experience in software development.

  • Proficiency in Java, C++, or C#, with strong skills in object-oriented design and software engineering fundamentals.

  • 1+ years of experience in designing and architecting scalable systems, including working knowledge of design patterns, system reliability, and performance optimization.

  • Demonstrated experience in coding, debugging, and deploying production-grade software solutions.


Preferred Qualifications

We are particularly interested in candidates who bring depth and breadth across multiple domains, including AI, distributed systems, and full-stack development.

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.

  • Experience participating in the full software development life cycle—from requirements to deployment and post-launch support.

  • Prior involvement in building multi-tiered systems or service-oriented architecture (SOA).

  • Working knowledge of AWS cloud services, microservices, or serverless architecture is a significant plus.

  • Exposure to machine learning concepts, computer vision, or IoT/sensor systems is a strong advantage.
