As a Principal Software Engineering Manager, you will lead the development of scalable, secure, and resilient services that power Microsoft’s modern cloud-based Windows experiences. You’ll manage and mentor a diverse and talented team of software engineers and collaborate closely with product managers, site reliability engineers (SREs), and partner teams. Your leadership will be instrumental in architecting and delivering cloud-native solutions for virtual compute, storage, networking, streaming, and more.

The Windows 365 Cloud PC and Azure Virtual Desktop services are revolutionizing how enterprises manage, access, and scale their computing needs. Recognized for two consecutive years in the Gartner Magic Quadrant™, these platforms provide secure, elastic, and efficient cloud-based Windows environments for millions of users.

The Cloud Platform team is responsible for the underlying infrastructure that enables these services to function seamlessly. This includes virtual compute, GPUs, core networking, connectivity services, cloud-based management, and streaming protocols such as RDP.


🧩 Key Responsibilities

As a Principal Software Engineering Manager, your responsibilities will include:

🔧 Technical Strategy & Execution

  • Architect and implement end-to-end cloud solutions that support distributed systems at scale.

  • Drive continuous improvements in platform reliability, availability, and performance.

  • Identify and resolve complex architectural challenges across cloud services.

  • Apply advanced system design, complexity analysis, and software development practices to deliver production-grade features.

👥 Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead and mentor a team of software engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

  • Empower your team to experiment, learn, and contribute to the greater Windows Cloud vision.

🔄 Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with internal teams such as Azure Compute, Core OS, Microsoft Security, and Identity to deliver cohesive product capabilities.

  • Influence strategic direction and design choices across multiple engineering teams and stakeholder groups.

  • Align product roadmaps with engineering milestones and business goals.

📈 Delivery & Operations

  • Lead the development of secure, scalable microservices using modern DevOps and CI/CD practices.

  • Establish telemetry, monitoring, and self-healing systems for live services.

  • Participate in service operations, including on-call rotations, incident management, and customer feedback loops.

🎯 Organizational Impact

  • Champion engineering excellence and maintain a high bar for code quality, testing, and maintainability.

  • Represent the Cloud Platform team in Microsoft-wide forums and industry discussions.

🎓 Required Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you must meet the following criteria:

  • A Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.

  • 6+ years of hands-on experience in software development, including coding, debugging, and system design using languages such as C++, C#, Java, Python, or JavaScript.

  • 2+ years of proven people management experience in leading engineering teams.

  • Experience designing and operating distributed systems or cloud-native services in a production environment.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a focus on stakeholder management and cross-functional alignment.

  • Ability to generate clarity in ambiguous and rapidly evolving environments.


⭐ Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven track record of shipping scalable, secure services in Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud Platform.

  • Experience with microservices architecture, Kubernetes, or similar container orchestration technologies.

  • Deep knowledge of site reliability engineering (SRE), service operations, and incident management.

  • Familiarity with cloud-based desktop virtualization, such as Windows 365, AVD, or related platforms.

  • Demonstrated success leading complex projects across cross-functional teams.

  • Proficiency in DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and observability frameworks.

  • Experience managing stakeholder relationships and presenting to executive leadership.
