Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Instrumentation Engineer to join our Energy Hydrocarbon Onshore team at L&T’s Chennai office. The ideal candidate will play a pivotal role in converting complex technical requirements into actionable engineering deliverables. Working under the guidance of the Lead Engineer, this role involves coordination across multidisciplinary teams, interacting with vendors, conducting quality checks, and contributing to the seamless execution of instrumentation and control systems in hydrocarbon projects.


Key Responsibilities

Engineering Deliverables and Design Activities

  • Translate and interpret technical project requirements into concrete engineering outputs in alignment with project goals.
  • Support the Lead Engineer by acting as a document checker for specific instrumentation deliverables.
  • Ensure timely and accurate post-order and pre-order vendor document reviews for assigned instrumentation packages.
  • Lead or support the engineering and design of instrumentation systems, especially in packages that require multi-disciplinary coordination.
  • Guide the preparation of construction drawings by providing necessary engineering inputs to design teams.
  • Conduct squad checks and inter-discipline design reviews to validate department engineering outputs.
  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines (e.g., Electrical and Process teams) to resolve interface issues such as P&ID and E&I alignment.

Vendor and Client Interaction

  • Regularly engage with vendors and subcontractors to resolve technical issues that arise during project execution.
  • Coordinate vendor document reviews, ensuring alignment with project specifications and timelines.
  • Represent the instrumentation department in interactions with clients, third-party inspectors, and certification agencies as required.

Project Coordination and Documentation

  • Foster effective collaboration with Lead Engineers and internal project teams to ensure seamless coordination across functions.
  • Proactively coordinate with other engineering disciplines to gather essential inputs and ensure uninterrupted project progress.
  • Ensure that all documentation complies with internal quality directives (QDs), departmental work instructions, and corporate Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical specifications, datasheets, and estimation documentation.

Technical Skills and Competencies

Essential Technical Skills

  • Proficient in instrumentation and control systems design within the hydrocarbon, petrochemical, or energy sectors.
  • Capability to handle estimation engineering activities with minimal supervision.
  • Familiarity with international standards and practices in instrumentation engineering.
  • Hands-on experience in the review and development of technical documents such as datasheets, IO lists, instrument indexes, hook-up diagrams, and wiring schedules.
  • Knowledge of control systems including DCS, PLC, SCADA, and their integration into plant operations.
  • Coordination with electrical engineers for E&I interfaces and with process teams for P&ID development and control logic validation.

Desirable Technical Skills

  • Exposure to HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Study) and SIL (Safety Integrity Level) assessments.
  • Experience in package instrumentation engineering for complex multi-disciplinary systems.
  • Understanding of smart instrumentation tools such as SPI (SmartPlant Instrumentation).
