Position Overview: Mechanical Packages Engineer
L&T is looking for a highly experienced Mechanical Packages Engineer with a strong background in engineering design and project execution of water-related packaged equipment. The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on experience in managing multidisciplinary engineering functions related to mechanical equipment in oil & gas and petrochemical plants.
Key Responsibilities
✅ Lead Packaged Equipment Engineering

Function as the lead engineer for assigned projects, overseeing the complete lifecycle of packaged mechanical equipment in the energy sector.

Take responsibility for design, engineering, and integration of complex water treatment systems and other related packaged units.
✅ Design & Technical Documentation
-
Execute detailed engineering for a variety of water-related packages including:
-
Raw water treatment units
-
Reverse Osmosis (RO) modules
-
Produced water treatment plants
-
Softening systems for reinjection purposes
-
Effluent treatment for petrochemical plants
-
Wastewater treatment systems tailored to oil & gas operations
-

Develop equipment datasheets, generate mechanical design specifications, and ensure technical compliance.
✅ Vendor Management & Procurement Support

Prepare technical requisitions and evaluate vendor proposals for mechanical packages.

Conduct thorough technical bid evaluations and provide detailed analyses.

Participate in vendor discussions, offer clarifications, and finalize supplier documentation.

Approve vendor drawings and documents after comprehensive review.
✅ Quality & Compliance

Ensure that all engineering activities are carried out in compliance with industry codes, client specifications, and L&T’s internal quality assurance procedures.

Actively support and implement departmental quality management systems and continuous improvement programs.
✅ Technical Coordination

Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams, including civil, piping, electrical, and instrumentation disciplines.

Liaise with the procurement, proposal, and construction departments to ensure seamless project delivery.

Lead the troubleshooting and resolution of complex issues during design, procurement, and site execution stages.
✅ Project Delivery & Commissioning Support

Ensure timely delivery of all engineering outputs within the specified quality standards.

Participate in inspection, testing, and commissioning of packaged equipment at vendor sites and project locations.

Provide technical assistance during the installation and startup phase.

Collaborate closely with other Lead Engineers (LEs), task force engineers, project managers, and discipline specialists.

Interface directly with vendors, third-party inspection agencies, and client representatives to ensure alignment on technical specifications and deliverables.

Mechanical Engineering Expertise: Profound understanding of mechanical design principles, materials selection, and international engineering standards.

Packaged Equipment Design: In-depth knowledge of various water treatment technologies used in oil & gas and chemical industries.

Vendor Coordination: Ability to critically assess technical proposals, engage in commercial negotiations, and manage vendor performance through project cycles.

Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Comfort working within a multi-functional engineering environment with tight integration across departments.

Problem-Solving Ability: Proven track record of resolving engineering challenges at both design and execution stages.

Documentation & QA/QC: Strong proficiency in preparing, reviewing, and approving engineering documents, ensuring technical accuracy and adherence to quality benchmarks.
Desired Candidate Profile

A degree (B.Tech) in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized institution.

9–15 years of progressive experience in mechanical engineering roles, particularly in water-related equipment used in oil & gas or petrochemical sectors.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to lead technical discussions.

Demonstrated leadership in handling engineering deliverables across multi-disciplinary teams.

Familiarity with industry codes such as ASME, API, and other international standards.
